How We Met and Became a "We"

I realized kind of belatedly that I haven't really told the in-depth story of us. And I mean, who doesn't love to read ooey-gooey lovey-dovey stories? :)

I initially wrote this in third person for our Wedding Website because I figured it 'fit' better with the whole storytelling ideal - I hope you don't mind, Hive, that I've decided to keep it that way.

Mr. and Miss Palm Tree first met when Miss Palm Tree's family moved across the street from Mr. PT's family. Their younger sisters were the same age and immediately became best friends. The closest kids to Miss Palm Tree's age, of course, were the neighborhood boys. . .who, of course, hated Miss Palm Tree. . .who, of course, was persistent and obnoxious enough to continue to try to hang around them, despite this hatred. Scars (literal scars!) and stories ensued.

Miss PT's family moved across town when she was about 10 years old; although their sisters remained close friends, Mr. and Miss Palm Tree only saw each other in bits and pieces, when one of the girls was being dropped off or something similar. When Miss PT started high school in 2003, Mr. PT was already a junior. Their paths crossed pretty consistently; they had the same lunch and seemed to take the same hallways at the same time - but Mr. PT blatantly refused to acknowledge Miss PT. It became a game to her; she would get up and walk past his lunch table to see if he would notice, one time she even allowed him to literally run into her in the hallway - but still, no reaction. During the Spring of 2004, Miss Palm Tree and a girlfriend were at Dunkin' Donuts when Mr. Palm Tree and his friend walked in; naturally, Miss Palm Tree's friend knew the mister's friend, and so they started talking. Infuriated, Miss PT specifically walked up to where the friends were chatting, and FINALLY, Mr. PT acknowledged her. A very trivial, childish interaction followed:

Mister: Hi Miss Palm Tree.
Miss: Hi.
Mister: Why don't you ever say hi to me?
Miss: . . .Why don't YOU ever say hi to ME?
Mister: Well, maybe I'll start then.
Miss: Well, maybe you should.
Although it started out as Mr. PT obnoxiously saying 'hello' to her in the hallway, soon a real friendship formed. The two would have long conversations when they could, catching up on everything, and hung out a few times. Miss PT started to sincerely like Mr. PT, and it was fairly obvious the feelings were mutual. Through another series of coincidences, Miss PT was with a group of friends who were going to another, more distant, friends' house - which happened to be a block away from Mr. PT. An idea started forming and Miss PT called home, hoping to reach her sister, whom she intended to use to call Mr. PT's sister to see if he was home. Her mother answered, stating that her sister was actually at his sister's for a sleepover.

Miss PT took this as a sign and marched over to Mr. Palm Tree's house and boldly knocked on the door, under the pretense of looking for her sister. Although only a conversation and some hand-holding occurred that evening, it was one of their long and fairly deep get-to-know-you conversations. Not long after that, she went to his place to visit, and after a few shots of stolen liquor (shhh!) the two ended up spilling some serious beans, the most important bean coming from Mr. Palm Tree: "You know how your mom always used to tell you 'boys only tease you because they like you' when I would send you home crying? She was right. That was the reason I didn't talk to you at first in school - I was embarrassed."

They had their first kiss that night. They became 'official' on May 27th, 2004 - after yet another one of their trademark lengthy discussions on the phone the previous night, during which the mister told the miss: "You don't always have to keep these walls up, you know. You can put them down; I'm not going to throw any punches." The rest is history. After nearly nine years of everything you can imagine (including a year-long "break" during college, that was never really a break because the two remained the best of friends and did not go longer than a day without speaking throughout), the Palm Trees are happily living together in Pittsburgh, planning a wedding and looking forward to the rest of their lives.
